So... what's the story?

Telling stories has always been at the heart of all my work. My storytelling started as a big sister, then an actress, a chief executive, a mum and less consciously in many other contexts. As a Clore Cultural Leadership Fellow, I had the chance to reflect on this and became much more aware of my own skills and experience, and - most importantly - love of storytelling. Oral storytelling is therefore now a key part of my work.

All my stories are interactive - but some more so than others! When I'm telling pre-existing stories - either traditional tales or those I've written myself - there are always elements for the listeners to become involved. With interactive stories, the entire story is created in a joint venture between me and the listeners - and normally we all get so caught up in the story we don't even notice who's making up what!

My stories are always tailored to the audience they are for. I believe that everyone, no matter how young or old, has a 'storytelling response', its just a matter of finding the way to elicit it. So, my stories range from 'touchy feely' stories for tiny babies and mums where texture and smell become part of the narrative, to morality street stories that challenge the preconceptions of teenagers, to reminscence stories to delight elders.

Wherever they're needed! Storytelling is for everyone and can be done anywhere - which is part of the joy of it - so I'm happy to tell my stories for private parties, schools, offices, prisons, gardens.... and anywhere in between.
