I started out as a professional actress in 1995, and over five years I performed in theatres, community halls, museums, dockyards, trains and railway stations. I loved the non-theatre venues and interactive ways of performing so in 2000, I founded the ground breaking interactive theatre company Ladder to the Moon, where I remained as Artistic Director until 2005. My theatre work currently has three main strands: Interactive Characters, Storyplaytime and work with Young Adults.
I've created interactive characters and scenarios for heritage walks, hospitals, shopping centres and streets. I create characters that bring environments to life through telling their stories, whether that environment be a museum exhibition, an office or a town centre. I recently completed the first academic research in the UK into the nature and practice of interactive theatre, so I am now uniquely placed to be able to both create this work and train actors in how to perform it
When my son was a baby, he loved the 'babies theatre' I took him to but they were always one off events. Inspired by the shows and my own interest in interactive work, I set about creating a way of sharing the joys of theatre with the very young as a regular event. Storyplaytime is the result - interactive theatre activity sessions for the under 5s. For more information on this visit www.storyplaytime.co.uk
I've been creating youth drama projects since 2002. My philosophy is to get young people from all walks of life working together alongside professional theatre practitioners to find ways of telling the stories they want to tell. These projects work best when there's a chance to perform their work back to their own community, the people that need to hear those stories.
If you would like to discuss a potential project or want more information on any of the three strands of theatre work mentioned on this page, then please do get in touch on justine@sowhatsthestory.co.uk.
